Emily Reily 31 Oct 2018

It's the most wonderful time of the year - Halloween! It's the only day kids can dress up in crazy costumes while asking for candy from strangers. Adults often get in on the action too. Here are the top trending costumes this Halloween.

Fortnite

At the top of the list: Fight off zombie-like beings while dressing up as a character from Fortnite, the online video game that has swept the world by storm. Choose between two types of games: Save the World or Battle Royale, which has locked in more than 125 million players already. In Battle Royale, which you can play with 100 people, you knock down buildings with a pickaxe and use "V-Bucks."

No surprise that everyone's favorite superhero is number two on Google's list of top-trending costumes. Peter Parker first appeared in 1962, an orphan whose parents were killed in a plane crash. After being bitten by a radioactive spider, Parker takes on superhero characteristics, perfect fodder for a Halloween costume.

Unicorn

Everyone likes unicorns, so why not be one for Halloween? These mystical, magical creatures have been popular for eons. The dark fantastical movie Legend famously portrays a unicorn that must be saved from the evil clutches of Tim Curry. Unicorns are easy for mere mortals to portray, too --just wear something pink and frilly, and attach a single horn to your head.

Gahr! Pirates again are near the top of the list of most trending Halloween costumes. These get-ups typically portray the pirate as that swashbuckling, evil-eyed scoundrel that make people swab decks. Or something like that. Either way, they're usually bad, which means they're fun to dress up as for Halloween. Grab a black curly-haired wig, an old-fashioned hat such as a tricorne, and an eye patch and you're in business. Now go swindle some candy, mateys!

Clown

Despite what you've heard, clowns are generally good people. Their main goal is to make balloon animals and help kids smile. If your local clown tends to hide in the sewer though, you may want to seek cover. You can play this outfit as loud or as soft as you want, from wearing just a simple, classic clown nose to donning the entire outfit, "It"-style. Just please don't scare the children.

Mermaid

A mermaid costume is another fantastical character that continues to be popular during Halloween. In case you weren't sure, a mermaid is a female with the tail of a fish, an image possibly hailing from the Sirens of Greek myth. There are also mermen, but they don't get out much this time of year. It's unclear how you'll be able to walk to each house to collect candy if your feet are floppy fins, but at least you'll look cool.

Zombies!

Ahh, zombies! Zombies make a gruesome comeback every season, and for good reason. You get to put white paint and fake blood on your face and wear ripped clothing while walking around maniacally in search of the living. Zombie parades are popular too, including ones where they reenact the entire dance from Michael Jackson's Thriller. So get in on the act .... while you're still alive.
