Lorde Roasted Kanye Online for Allegedly Stealing Her Ideas

avery.gillis 13 Nov 2018

Lorde has it out for Kanye West, which is something I never thought I'd hear myself say, but here we are.

The thing is, not everyone agrees that Lorde is in the right here, and there's drama galore.

When it comes to drama in Hollywood, there's a handful of celebs that we usually see involved.

Typically, it's the Kardashians, Chrissy Teigen, or Nicki Minaj.

So you can imagine our surprise to see that Lorde is throwing down the gloves for once.

It's pretty rare for her to stir up drama, but when the girl wants to make a point, she doesn't hesitate.

There was the time she subtly dragged Taylor Swift years ago.

But her words were taken out of context, and she and Taylor are actually really good friends now, so clearly, nobody was shook.

And not too long ago, she found herself in some hot water after she posted a picture of her bathtub.

Twitter | @HUNTYCHAN

She paired the photo with Whitney Houston lyrics.

Load Comments

Of course, she didn't consider the fact that just a few years prior, Whitney had died in a bathtub.

Twitter | @Iemonade

A lot of people called her out for the post and called it tasteless.

She was quick to apologize, however, and didn't even realize the connection between her photo and the lyrics.

Instagram | @lordemusic

Honestly, from one girl who loves baths to another, I don't blame her. I wouldn't have made the connection either.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that Lorde is suuuper unproblematic.

But clearly you don't want to make her angry, because make no mistake, she will come for you.

So here's what went down.

Basically, Kanye and Kid Cudi's tour, "Kids See Ghosts," debuted in LA recently.

During the show, the pair performed several songs while suspended in a glass box above the stage.

Looks cool enough, that's some solid production value, right?

While Kanye fans may have been impressed, Lorde fans were not.

And many were quick to point out that she too had performed in a glass box, similar to the one that Kanye and Kid Cudi performed in.

In the past, Lorde has spoken about the tank used in her shows.

YouTube | reflectivehatemosh

She explained to The Spinoff that she had worked with stage designer Es Devlin to come up with something that felt "new."

"The tank it felt weird and interesting and quite specific to me," she said.

"It’s also enough of a canvas that we can continue to switch up with how we interact with that piece of gear, so it was appealing to me for those reasons," she added.

So clearly, this tank is an important piece of the stage to Lorde.

Instagram | @lordemusic

And seeing Kanye and Kid Cudi perform in a look-alike tank, wasn't something she was all too excited about.

Load Comments

She quickly took to her Instagram stories to express her concern and dislike about the tank.

And you know that when celebs take to their Insta stories, they mean business.

Load Comments

She shared several photos of her stage, and compared them to Kanye and Kid Cudi's stage.

The stage from her Coachella performance is on the left, Kanye and Kid Cudi's is on the right.

Load Comments

And I will give her the benefit of the doubt and say that yes, the stages do look pretty similar to each other.

Instagram | @lordemusic

There's no denying that.

She also added that she was proud of the work she does, and wasn't cool with other artists stealing from her.

Instagram | @lordemusic

"I'm proud of the work I do and it's flattering when other artists feel inspired by it, to the extent that they choose to try it on themselves. But don't steal — not from women or anyone else — not in 2018 or ever," the full caption read.

I couldn't help but notice that Lorde's quote sounded pretty similar to Taylor Swift's speech at the 2017 Grammy Awards.

And considering that they're friends, maybe that's where she drew her inspiration from.

For those who forgot — Kanye rapped about Taylor in one of his songs, claiming that he "made that [expletive] famous."

YouTube | ArtisanNewsService

Taylor wasn't on board with that lyric, and shaded him during her acceptance speech, saying: "I want to say to all the young women out there: There are going to be people along the way who try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. But if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday, when you get where you’re going, you will look around and you will know — it was you, and the people who love you, who put you there. And that will be the greatest feeling in the world."

Anyway, we're all here for women protecting their craft.

However, some fans on Twitter couldn't help but point out that Kanye used a similar floating platform during his previous tour.

Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber have also used similar stage designs during their live performances.

What's also interesting is that the stage designer Lorde mentioned, Es Devlin, has worked with Kanye for years.

Giphy | undefined

This according to TMZ anyway.

So isn't it weird to accuse the person who designed your stage of stealing their own design for a different stage?

At this point, I'm confused.

Es shared a few photos on Instagram of yet another glass box design of theirs, proving again that Lorde's glass box idea wasn't her own.

Instagram | @esdevlin

"CARMEN by Georges Bizet, English National Opera 2007," they captioned the photos.

Load Comments

So far there's been no word from Kanye or Kid Cudi about this whole situation.

Giphy | Nick Cannon

And I don't think there will be, because the fans have spoken.
