Invitations to the event are super exclusive and the tickets to gala are crazy expensive. ($30,000!) So, when a star gets the chance to attend the gala, it's sort of like hitting a new milestone in their careers.

The Gossip Girl star made her first Met Gala appearance back in 2008 when the theme was Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy.

Her date for the night was none other than, Dan Humphrey Penn Badgley, her former on-screen and IRL love interest.

Aww, don't they look so young and adorable?

Before Katy Perry was wearing daring costumes to the Met Gala, she was keeping things simple on the red carpet.

The singer wore a sleek, blue Tommy Hilfiger dress to the 2009 gala where the theme was The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion.

SJP is another stylish celeb who had more humble beginnings.

Her first time at the Met was back in 1995 and her outfit of choice was a sleek black dress for that year's theme of "Haute couture."

To be fair, it doesn't seem as though very many people were dressed according to theme back them.

Miranda Priestly would have been proud.

The Devil Wears Prada star attended her first Met gala back in 2009 and quickly figured out the whole theme dressing set-up.

Her teased-for-the-gawds hairdo fits right in with that year's theme The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion.

Who can forget this Met gala debut?

Kim made headlines, and left many scratching their heads, after she wore this floor-length floral Givenchy dress to her first Met Ball.

The theme was Punk: Chaos to Couture, but it seemed Kim may have mistakenly gotten an invitation to the 2004 Fashion and Furniture themed gala instead.

Victoria's first time at the Met Gala back in 2003 is a reminder to us all that the early 2000's was a terrible time in fashion.

The theme for the year was _Goddess: The Classical Mode _ and the former Spice Girl wore a see-through, rhinestone-covered Dolce & Gabbana number with some uncomfortable looking shoes.

Thank goodness we've all evolved past this.

You would never guess it, but before Rih Rih started absolutely slaying the Met Gala, she was stepping out in more basic looks.

Her very first Met Gala was back in 2007 and the theme was Poiret: King of Fashion.

She wore a white basic-for-Rihanna dress by Georges Chakra and while it is cute, it's nothing compared to what she wears now.

Kate's had a pretty good grasp on the Met gala themes from the jump.

Her first appearance at the charity gala was also back in 2003 when the theme was _Goddess: The Classical Mode _.

The actress looked totally goddess-like in a Stella McCartney Grecian-style dress and a jeweled headband to match.
