The One Thing We All Missed In 'Home Alone'

Everyone has one Christmas movie that they watch at least once a year during the holiday season. For me, that movie is Home Alone. Watching Kevin McCallister deal with two obnoxious burglars while drinking eggnog is an absolute treat. But regardless of how many times I've seen the film, I never noticed one thing in particular.

By now the plot of the movie should pretty much be known by everyone, but just in case you forget, here's a quick rundown.

20th Century Fox

Kevin McCallister is forgotten by his family as they leave for the Christmas vacation, and he is left home alone.

Things get worse when two holiday burglars decide to take advantage of what they assume is an empty house.

But little do they know, young Kevin has rigged the house with booby traps.

It's been 26 years since the film came out, but there are still avid rewatchers scanning for cinematic Easter eggs.

Recently one fan noticed something that will definitely change the way you see the movie.

While watching the movie, a Reddit user noticed something in one of the earlier scenes.

IMDb

This tiny detail will honestly leave you shakin' your head for not noticing.

Remember the scene where the entire family is packing for their trip?

20th Century Fox

A pizza delivery boy brings the McCallister's several pies and Joe Pesci's character shows up dressed like a cop in order to get a good look at the house he later hopes to rob.

The entire scene is quite hectic as most of the family members are running around packing and trying to clean up the house while eating.

20th Century Fox

Well in all of the excitement, we happened to miss something pretty important.

Notice something odd about this paused scene?

20th Century Fox

Take a long, hard look at this screeshot. See anything of interest? Anything that might cause an "ah-HA!" moment?

Yep that's right – Kevin's dad actually threw out Kevin's plane ticket by accident!

That's why they never noticed Kevin’s absence at the boarding gate!

Now obviously we aren't the FIRST people to discover this, but it is pretty commonly unknown.

IMDb

So much so that people have been asking questions in online forums and chatrooms.

We decided to find a better explanation and stumbled upon a pretty helpful post on IMDB.

20th Century Fox

It's amazing what kind of gems some novice sleuthing on the internet can discover.

An FAQ on IMDb explains the scene in further detail:

IMDb

They explain, "Kevin's ticket was tossed in the trash when his father wiped up after Kevin spilled milk all over the passports and tickets."

"While getting into the car to go to the airport, Heather miscounted because the neighbor kid was in line with the rest of the family."

IMDb

Which is honestly understandable considering how frantic and chaotic family trips are.

The FAQ continues, "Finally, the gate agent appears to be simply counting the McCallisters’ tickets instead of matching names with people."

IMDb

"Without a ticket for Kevin, no one apparently noticed that he was not in the group."

This logic might've gotten a pass back in 1990 when "Home Alone" was released, but...

20th Century Fox

These days, anyone who flies knows that security measures are far too intense for this mistake to occur.

Airport security now will not only check your ticket and your bags, they will also check your dignity.

And by that, I mean exactly what Jimmy Fallon is saying above. The saddest jumping jack the world ever saw.

Apparently John Hughes said that he hired Chris Columbus to direct because of his ability to ensure every possible plot hole has an explanation with his attention to detail.

IMDb

They covered their butts, which paid off in the end and probably contributed to Home Alone being a generational favorite!

One redditor mentioned that everything (the ticket being thrown out and Kevin sleeping alone upstairs) all boils down to ONE thing....

20th Century Fox

And in a way, everything in life boils down to this thing.

Kevin didn't want pepperoni on his pizza, which caused Buzz to bug him and caused Kevin to get upset.

20th Century Fox

Because Buzz ticked him off so badly, he pushed him and caused the spilled milk shenanigans.

So basically, the moral of this movie is to respect everyone's pizza preferences, or else risk total and complete chaos.

IMDb

Like I said, everything in life boils down to gettin' your pizza right.
