Man Arrested After Trying To Evade Police In Stolen Boat Going 4 Miles Per Hour

If we go by what we see in the movies and on curated "real" TV shows, it's easy to get the impression that the life of a cop is a non-stop action movie.

But while it's certainly a job that requires a strong stomach, it shares some common similarities with more other professions in that the most exciting parts of it tend to be the rarest. Those high speed car chases may make for good TV, but they're hardly an everyday occurrence.

That said, you're probably more likely to meet an officer who's been involved in a chase like that than you are to hear a story like the one that recently unfolded in the United Kingdom.

On April 23, an incident unfolded at a house in Leicester City, England.

As Leicestershire Live reported, police allege that a 37-year-old man visited a house he was barred from approaching due to a restraining order.

In the ensuing encounter, he was suspected of assaulting a 15-year-old boy who received no injuries as a result of the incident.

By 6 am the next morning, the man was spotted stealing a boat at the North Kilworth Marina.

According to The Telegraph, this witness took a picture of the departing boat, and its owner would call the police after learning it had been taken out without his knowledge.

The marina's management team then reviewed security footage and determined that the boat was heading south down the Grand Union Canal.

The closest officer to this location was on a bike but soon found they would have little trouble pursuing the suspect.

As this officer would later tweet out, that was because the boat was only moving at 4 miles per hour, while their bike tended to go between 12 and 15 miles per hour.

As they said, "For 15 years I've been trying to tick off a water-based pursuit in landlocked Leicester and today I've ticked it off."

With that in mind, it was just a matter of patiently following the man until he had to get out of the boat.

And once the boat approached Lock 37 on the canal, the officer said that moment finally came.

What the suspect didn't know was that while he was slowly trying to get away, the officer had already called for assistance from other officers.

So when the man disembarked, that presented an opportunity for officers who were hiding in some nearby undergrowth to pop out and arrest him.

According to Leicestershire Live, he was then detained and was scheduled to appear in the city's magistrates’ court on April 29.

When asked if drinking factored into this unusual chase, the pursuing officer responded, "I wasn't drunk. Neither was he."
