One Of The 'Rugrats' Moms Is Openly Gay In The Reboot Show

Fans of the original '90s cartoon Rugrats have a lot to be excited for. Recently, it was announced that the beloved series is getting a reboot on Paramount +.

Along with this news comes the exciting announcement that one of the Rugrats' moms will be openly gay in the show. And you probably won't be surprised to learn which one.

For most of the '90s and into the '00s, *Rugrats* was one of the most popular cartoons on TV.

The show centres around the bold and often daring adventures of newborn Tommy Pickles and his merry clan of diaper-clad friends.

But it's not all about the kids, Rugrats also focuses on the friendships of the adults and paints a pretty hilarious portrayal of early parenthood.

Fans of the original *Rugrats* series will no doubt remember Betty DeVille.

In the '90s version of the beloved cartoon, Betty lives next door to Stu and Didi (Tommy's mom and dad) and she's married to a timid, quirky character named Howard.

Oh, and she's also Phil and Lil's mom!

Who could forget these two fan favorites? Twins Phil and Lil are two of Tommy's best and closest friends.

Watching the twins fight (like only brothers and sisters can) is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the original series.

*Rugrats* the reboot recently premiered on Paramount +.

If you've been looking for a reason to try Paramount +, look no further than Rugrats. The newly rebooted series premiered on May 27th and features members of the original voice cast from the classic '90s series.

The new revamped series is also bringing with it some major changes.

Gone are the days of hand-drawn animation. We're officially in the era of CGI and the new Rugrats reflects that beautifully. I personally can't get enough of the new 3-D designs.

But that's not all. Betty has had an awakening since the show wrapped in 2004 and is eager to share it with the world.

Betty and Howard are no longer living together. Instead, Betty is living happily as an out and proud gay woman.

Betty isn't in a relationship but she often makes jokes about her ex-girlfriends.

She can be a straight-up savage sometimes, too! Betty is also the owner of a small cafe called...Betty's Beans...

When she's not working or spending time with the twins, Betty still enjoys hanging out with her friends and watching football.

Queer voice actor Natalie Morales says she feels that true fans knew about Betty all along.

During an interview with The A.V. Club, Natalie said:

“Anyone who watched the original show may have had an inkling Betty was a member of the alphabet mafia.”

Natalie also feels strongly that young queer kids need a strong role model to look up to.

Sure, Betty may be just a fictional character. But she also happens to be a business owner, a single mother, and a strong/supportive friend.

Natalie told The A.V. Club that she wished there were more characters like Betty when she was growing up.

She explained that cartoons have the power to be incredibly influential on young kids.

Natalie believes that if she had seen Betty casually talking about an ex-girlfriend when she was a child, that it might have helped her to gain a sense of confidence and normalcy regarding her sexuality.

Since the show's premiere, the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

Wouldn't that mean that Jerry is just another Howard? Either way, I'm in full agreement. Howard was kind of a useless character who offered very little in terms of plot relevance.

But then there are those who aren't so sure.

This Twitter user does have a point, I'd actually forgotten about the vow renewals.

Would it have made more sense to make Howard gay? Are you happy with the show so far? Leave a comment and let us know!
