Mom's PSA About Scrunchies Explains Why They're More Than Just A Fashion Trend For Teens

Teens are pros when it comes to inventing fads behind their parents' backs. The latest fad making its rounds online is the one and only scrunchie. These soft and colorful hair accessories are back, but one mom's post explains why they're more than a fashion statement.

In case you were worried that you fell asleep and woke up in some weird time warp, '90s fashion is back and better than ever.

Don't worry, you aren't imagining things. Everyone is suddenly dressing like it's 1995 again, especially when it comes to teens.

The crown jewel of this comeback?

The ultimate '90s hair accessory known as the scrunchie. How many of you wore these all day, every day in the '90s?

If you were a true '90s girl, you would coordinate your scrunchie to your outfit.

Obviously, wearing a conflicting scrunchie color was a major faux pas.

You can thank the resurgence of scrunchies to VSCO girls.

A "VSCO" girl is part meme, part cultural trend. The phrase describes modern teen girls and their affinity for '90s trends and posting videos on platforms like TikTok.

Just when you thought scrunchies were simply another fashion trend making a comeback, one mom took to Facebook to share some interesting information.

Emily Covington discovered that teens are doing more than just wearing scrunchies and her revelation was quite surprising for a number of parents.

In her "PSA", Emily asked parents if they wondered why their teen daughters were always buying scrunchies.

"Are you tired of wasting money on hair scrunchies? Feel like you're buying them every week? Wondering why your daughter can't keep up with them?" she wrote in her post.

Well, it turns out that there's a reason why teen girls are buying so many scrunchies.

"Well let me let you in on a little secret. ....They are being found in the dryer of every boy Mom's home," Emily said.

She went on to explain that, apparently, the new trend with teens is for girls to give their scrunchies to their crushes or people who they think are cute.

Her PSA included a picture of a pile of scrunchies her son was gifted.

Now parents know why they had to buy scrunchies for their teens at all hours of the day.

It's all starting to make sense now for these parents.

It didn't take long for Emily's post to go viral.

One person in the comments confirmed this phenomenon by sharing a picture of a boy's locker he saw. Take in all those scrunchies, folks.

For parents, this post was eye-opening.

If you have a teenage daughter who is suddenly begging you for scrunchies, now you know why.

And if you have a teenage son who has suddenly started wearing scrunchies, that means quite a few ladies fancy him.

If you were wondering if scrunchies had suddenly become a gender-neutral trend, here's why your son is wearing them.

For some, this information put their minds at ease.

It's good to know that these scrunchies were gifted and not the result of girls sneaking over all the time.

These scrunchies are even starting something of a black market with teens.

Apparently, one kid even bought a scrunchie from another for $20! Oh boy, I wonder how long this fad will last.

Well, like any other teen trend, now that the parents are in on it, that means the trend is likely on its way out.

Either way, Emily's PSA was certainly helpful for a lot of parents out there. Now, what to do with all those scrunchies?
