CEO Asks About Two Employees Who Keep Leaving Work At 6 PM, Gets Shut Down

Quora can be a double-edged sword when it comes to seeking answers. When you ask, you might end up getting confirmation for what you already believe. Other times, you might get torn apart. That's what happened when this question popped up:

I have two employees that usually leave work at 6 pm. They are good, but I don’t like that their commitment lasts for work hours only. What should I do as a CEO?

Prepare For Them To Leave

The resulting answers to this question probably did not leave the CEO in question feeling too warm. Some were pretty rough, telling the boss to "grow the f*ck up" and others giving more thoughtful answers on the modern work experience:

The vast majority of workers are not in it for their job, they are in it for what the job provides for them - salary, benefits, and the like. They do not live to work, they work in order to be able to provide for their life and their family if they have one.

Work Life Balance

The number of hours spent at work each week has become a debate online in recent weeks, with Elon Musk saying 80-100 hours shouldn't be strange -- with many disagreeing.

On Quora, a number of replies pointed out the need for work/life balance in life. 60-90 hours a week, with 12 hour days doesn't cut it for some younger workers today according to Paul LaRue.

At the end of the day, many are viewing a job as just a job these days.

Look after your employees and they will look after your business seems like pretty good advice. If an employee is happy, there isn't much worry -- unless they happen to just be bad at their job.

That's just another kettle of fish, though.

Written Warning

This is why you just need to turn your phone off. We're too connected to phones these days and it opens the doors to this sort of thing.

There is a reason why places in Europe are making laws against this very thing.

Clock In, Clock Out

Kaylynjay / Reddit

The idea of clocking in and then clocking out each day isn't too odd in this day -- at least for an employee. Too many times employees have given more than required and sacrificed personal life for their job, only to be kicked when things go bad.

Remember that a job is just a job.

'Defend' The Employer

Defending the employer can only really get you so far. Yeah, there's no reason to rock the boat if it isn't doing anything to harm people. But pushing more hours on people who were hired to do a set amount? Don't be that kind of suck up.

Contracts

Contracts are important for many reasons. If an employer furloughs you or doesn't pay you because the company can't find the money, they protect everybody legally.

It also sets out the standards and requirements of the job before you start, keeping things in the clear and avoiding the scenario where a CEO has to ask Quora for advice.
